Flagstaff--near the Grand Canyon--is a great base for exploring the Colorado Plateau
Flagstaff is ideally situated for exploring the Colorado Plateau, a region with an astounding concentration of national parks and monuments. We are located a leisurely 5 minute walk from the historic downtown area and Route 66. The house was originally built in 1914 and at the time was on the edge of town. Flagstaff has now grown into a small city and the house is now considered to be downtown. We thoroughly remodeled it in 1994 (the kitchen in 1999) with all the modern conveniences and the house is now 242 sq. meters. On the ground floor are: a comfortable living room with stereo; dish satellite and internet-streaming television and Blueray player; the dining room; library with piano and computer with free internet; fully equipped kitchen with eating area; laundry room; and two bedrooms, each with a full bathroom. Upstairs is a second living room, a small office, bathroom and a third bedroom being used as an art studio . We installed solar hot water heating in 2008 and added 21 roof-top photovoltaic panels in 2009.
The backyard has a small, private garden for relaxation. It includes some interesting plants, including hops plants for privacy in the summer and for beer making in the autumn. There is also a small vegetable garden and a strawberry patch for you to eat from. Two bar-b-q grills are available: one is gas for convenience and the other uses charcoal for the better taste.
Twelve years ago we removed the lawn in front and have emphasized edible ornamental plants, including 2 fruit trees and saffron crocuses for making paella.
The vehicle we would exchange is a 2003 Toyota RAV-4, a small SUV that seats 4 comfortably and gets decent fuel economy.
Some of our exchangers have remarked on how many stars there are here. With 5 major observatories, Flagstaff became the world's very first International Dark Sky City. The deck in the backyard is a good place for observing meteor showers, weather permitting.
One can spend a lifetime exploring the area; a one month exchange would allow only a very small taste of what the region has to offer and would come nowhere near to exhausting the possibilities. There are still "hidden secrets" that we are discovering after 33 years here. We invite you to begin your exploration with our home as a base.

Vecindario
Sobre el vecindario
What's there to see? Google these local sights:
• Lowell Observatory was where Pluto was discovered
• Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monuments are a short distance out of town.
• The San Francisco Peaks are the most southerly alpine tundra in the continental US and sacred to local Indian tribes. Site of a ski area, whose ski lift is open in the summer with views of the distant Grand Canyon.
• Riordan State Historical Park preserves the home of early Flagstaff timber barons.
• Don't miss the First Friday Art Walk each month in the historic downtown center of Flagstaff.
• Meteor Crater offers a great view of a meteor impact crater. It's located approximately 30 miles east of the city
• The South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is where most of the tourists visit
• Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon offer wonderful views and hiking in the Red Rock country, as well as art galleries
• Montezuma Castle National Monument highlights a cliff dwelling, while Tuzigoot National Monument features a valley Indian dwelling
• Jerome State Historical Park. A former copper mining town became a ghost town and is now an art center
These require a day’s drive:
• Lake Powell and Rainbow Bridge are a bit further afield and are well worth visiting
• Antelope Canyon. A Navajo tribal park open for hiking and photography with a guide. Spectacular photos with lighting changing by the hour
• Canyon de Chelly is a steep-sided and narrow canyon still inhabited by Navajos and open to visitors with a guide.
• Navajo National Monument is a lesser visited park with interesting cliff dwellings and hiking
• Monument Valley is a spectacular Navajo tribal park that was the setting for many of the classic John Ford western movies. Visit with a guide in the early morning hours
• North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is three hundred meters higher than the South Rim, producing a different vegetation and is much less visited
• Las Vegas
• Hopi Villages. Several of the villages still allow non-Indians to visit their traditional ceremonial dances
These require several days but can be joined to make a loop:
• Zion National Park
• Cedar Breaks National Park is a smaller version of Bryce Canyon but with far fewer visitors
• Bryce Canyon National Park. Zion, Cedar Breaks and Bryce can make a great loop trip for several days
• Chaco Canyon National Park has amazing Indian ruins of such size that there were not structures in the US capable of housing so many people until the 1880s. It is one of our favorite areas and it hosts few visitors
• Mesa Verde National Park features classic Indian cliff dwellings
• Canyonlands National Park
• Deadhorse State Park
• Capitol Reef National Park
• Arches National Park
• Natural Bridges National Park, and Capitol Reef National Park could be done in a multi-day loop

A wonderful base for exploring the nature and cultures of the Colorado Plateau
Mike is retired after 23 years of teaching and 40 years rowing rafts in the Grand Canyon and elsewhere as a river guide.
After 45 years of teaching high school English Kathi reluctantly retired. Both of us are avid readers and travelers. Kathi also loves to paint.
